I want to give everybody a little treat every Friday and give you my top five in a category. Every Friday I will pick a topic and will take recommendations from readers on a top five they would like to see. For my first top five, I have chosen comedy. This is my favorite genre of movie. There are many kinds of comedies. You have your romantic comedies, dark comedies, comedy dramas, action comedy, slapstick comedy, science fiction comedy, and even military comedy. My favorite kind of comedy are the ones that make me laugh out loud and don’t need to have any real purpose. I like my comedy to have true entertainment value. So here they are, my comedy top 5:
1. Movie: Supper Troopers (2001)
Written by and starring the Broken Lizard comedy group (Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske). Also starring Brian Cox, Daniel von Bargen, Marisa Coughlan, Lynda Carter, John Bedford Lloyd, Jim Gaffigan, Michael Weaver, Geoffrey Arend.
If you have seen this movie then you already know how funny it is. If you watched it and didn’t find it funny then you just don’t like the same kind of comedy I do, and that is just fine. If you haven’t seen this movie it is a laugh out loud kind of movie and you don’t need to be stoned to do so. There is a lot of references to drugs and drinking, but that is just the kind of comedy that the Broken Lizard guys tend to stick with. If you find that offensive than steer clear of this one and keep reading for some other options.
Some of the things that make this movie so great is that you love the characters you are supposed to like and hate the ones you should hate. The jokes are the kind that you can repeat with your friends and still find them funny. I love that kind of movie. My sisters and I growing up would sit at the dinner table and just do movie lines. I still text my sister “littering and” and she knows to text me back “smoking the refer”. This movie has so many jokes and memorable moments. I will watch this movie when I am felling a little blue and it is a great pick me up.
Plot of movie is the High Way Patrol has to save their station from being closed down. The local cops are beating them in numbers and are all together just a bad group of guys, the one girl is good. Will the good guys win. Nope! And I’m not going to tell you why because that is the great part about this movie.
I do recommend the other movies by the Broken Lizard guys as well. They include: Beerfest (2006) and The Slammin’ Salmon(2009). They have others, but I have included only my favorites.
I have read recently that they have written a sequel script to this movie and Beerfest and I am super excited to see these.
2. Movie: Hot Fuzz (2007)
Directed and co-written by Edgar Wright, and co-written and starring Simon Pegg alongside Nick Frost. Also starring Jim Broadbent, Paddy Considine, Timothy Dalton, Billie Whitelaw, Edward Woodward, Rafe Spall, Olivia Colman, Martin Freeman, Bill Nighy, Steve Coogan
Okay, Yes, I have a little thing about cop movies. I used to work in security and maybe that is the reason why. That doesn’t really matter though because this movie is funny. Both “cop” movies aren’t really cop movies in my mind anyway. There isn’t a serious arrest or story plot in these movies. If it matters to anybody, I have a thing for British movies; and yes this movie is a British comedy. The two actors, Simon and Nick, play off each other so well.
The plot is simple in this movie. A ‘by the book’ cop is showing up all the other cops in his department and is relocated to a small country town where nothing every happens. Nothing turns out to be a big cover up and something big indeed is happening. A lot of guns get fired and one liners are served up for our pleasure. The comedy in this movie is simple, yet funnier then most toilet humor. (I don’t have a problem with toilet humor. I just don’t find it as funny as straight up good jokes.)
Again I loved the other movie, Shaun of the Dead (2004), both Simon and Nick star in as well. They also were in a television show called Spaced that is funny and worth checking out if you like their movies.
I can’t wait to see it, but they are also in the movie that is coming out in August 2013 (released today in the UK) called The World’s End.
3. Movie: Oscar(1991)
Starring Sylvester Stallone, Chazz Palminteri, Marisa Tomei, Tim Curry, Peter Riegert, Ornella Muti, Don Ameche, William Atherton, Joey Travolta, Paul Greco, Kirk Douglas, Richard Foronjy, Yvonne De Carlo, Richard Romanus, Elizabeth Barondes, Eddie Bracken, Linda Gray, Vincent Spano, Kurtwood Smith, Harry Shearer, Ken Howard, Martin Ferrero
So I went the other way with this one. It isn’t a cop movie, but is a mobster movie. This is a movie I don’t think a lot of people remember, but if you do then you remember how funny it is. Netflix classifies this as a slapstick comedy, but it isn’t the same kind of slapstick like you would see with the Three Stooges. The cast is well put together, and I think I watched this movie about four times a week for a straight month when I first discovered it. I have always been drawn to the kind of comedy that is a little round about and you have to think a little. There is a lot of misdirection and it is very fast paced at times.
Basic idea is that Oscar is the leader of the mob and wants to go clean. The cops are trying to finally catch him in an illegal act. As he is trying to clean up his act a series of unfortunate events occurs that puts him right in the middle of many illegal acts that he doesn’t have any control over. There are three suit cases involved and you are trying to keep up with what is in each one.
In case you can”t get your hands on this one to watch I rank it in the same kind of films as Clue (1985) and Johnny Dangerously (1984). These are older movies, but man are they funny.
4: Movie: Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
This is another movie that you can just spew out movie lines and almost anybody that has seen it will say the next line. The cast is amazing. There really isn’t a great reason to explain why I like this movie. It has very unbelievable parts and it just doesn’t make sense, and maybe that is why it is so funny. In the middle of the movie there is an anchorman rumble that ends with a lot of weapons being drawn and a guy stabs another one with a trident (as in Poseidon’s trident not the gum). At the end of the movie there is another fight, but people against bears this time. It’s okay though, because who really cares if the movie makes sense when it is meant to be entertaining. This movie does it’s job.
The plot is that Ron Burgundy and his team are the best news crew. There are some changes that make Ron uncomfortable and he begins to fight with the new (woman) anchorperson. He gets fired from his job after a lot of funny events, and falls apart quickly. He realizes he loves the woman and fights for her and gets his job and the woman in the end. I find that in good comedies (that aren’t romantic comedies) the plot and the love story aren’t the important part. The jokes have to be strong and this one has a lot that just make it work.
And yes this one has a sequel coming out too. We have to wait till December of this year though.
5. Movie: Space Balls (1987)
This is a spoof on Star Wars that even Star Wars fans can love. It doesn’t directly make fun of Star Wars so it isn’t an insensitive move. It has characters like Dark Helmet, Pizza the Hut, and Yogurt. These are funny spoofs of the original characters Darth Vader, Jabba the Hutt and Yoda. The comedy in this movie is obvious and doesn’t have to be thought about. It again is for pure entertainment value.
Lone Starr is a smuggler for higher and owes a lot of money to Pizza the Hut. He is to rescue the princes to get the reward to pay Pizza. He falls in love with her and has to save her planet. End of Plot. Again, who cares? This movie is funny from the very beginning to the very end.
There is a cartoon spin off of this movie, but I did not find it as enjoyable as the movie so did not continue watching after the first episode. I can’t give a great review on the cartoon so make judgement for yourself.
So that is the end of my top 5. All of these movies ranks as follows: Characters: 5 out of 5 stars, Acting: 5 out of 5 stars, Entertainment: 5 out of 5 stars, Comedy:5 out of 5 stars
That is the reason they are on this list. I am not saying any comedy is worse then this. I’m not saying any aren’t better then this. I might have forgot a great movie and should have put it on the list. If you think so, feel free to leave a comment. I hope this list inspires somebody to watch a new movie or re-watch an old favorite.
So let’s grab our popcorn and watch.
Have a great Friday!
